Teenage PregnancyNavigation: Main page Pregnancy Without Pounds Author: weekbyweek-pregnancy.com A Look At Teenage PregnancyDefined as pregnancy occurring in women under the age of 20, teenage pregnancy is a growing fear for many because it raises both physical and medical concerns. Often stemming from a lack of family support and an understanding of responsibility, teenage pregnancy is often the result of both social and family elements. Among them, religion, moral values, beliefs, economic status and the ability to gain access to the proper health care, contraception and educational resources available to teenagers who are most in need of them. The leading cause of teenage pregnancy is the lack of proper contraception. Whether it be from a lack of knowledge and information or suffering from feelings of embarrassment when seeking contraception, many teens are not aware of the importance of responsibility. In other cases, the proper contraception is used but fails to work as it is intended. For some, the belief that educating teenagers will help them to make better informed decisions and may thereby lessen the likelihood of teenage pregnancy. Many people, however, are on the opposing side of this argument as they feel that providing this type of education too early would only promote it's occurrence and may lead to even more teen pregnancies. Among their arguments, they feel that abstinence should be promoted instead of education children on matters that are more suited for adults. When teenage pregnancy does occur, it often raises growing medical concerns for both the mother and her unborn child. The occurrence of premature birth and low birth weight are both higher among teenage mothers. Because they are young and often not familiar with the importance of eating right during pregnancy, teens often suffer from nutritional deficiencies stemming from poor eating habits. In addition to medical concerns, there are additional factors that a young mother may face. Among them, difficulty finding employment because of a restricted schedule, the inability to complete her high school or college education, etc. If a teen mother has the love and support of her family, however, she can complete these things with a lot of hard work and added effort.
